Game Overview

Operation Nightfall is a sandbox-focused real-time strategy game about responding to a large-scale biohazard outbreak as it unfolds in real time.

You command a single fictional faction — the National Biohazard Response Command (NBRC) — tasked with containment, evacuation, and damage control.

The objective is not to eliminate the infection outright, but to save as many civilians as possible while managing limited resources, incomplete information, and escalating threats.

There are no visible countdown timers, no constant alerts, and no traditional win/lose screen. Pressure builds quietly through interacting systems working against you over time.

Game Modes

Sandbox Mode (Primary): Fully systemic and replayable with no scripted events. Outbreak behavior and civilian reactions vary each run, creating unique scenarios.
Co-op Mode (Planned): 2–3 player cooperative play with shared simulation and separate resources. Friends-only, no matchmaking, no PvP, and no competitive mechanics.
Campaign Mode (Planned): Reserved for possible future development. Would use the same systems as sandbox mode but with authored escalation and structured scenarios.

How the Game Works

Observe: Gather information from news reports, radio broadcasts, and map activity.
Deploy: Move squads, secure areas, and establish evacuation routes.
Protect & Evacuate: Civilians must be physically moved to safe zones and extracted by helicopter.
Contain: Slow the spread and stabilize regions where possible.
Adapt: React to new threats, infrastructure loss, and unreliable information.

There is no single correct strategy. The game rewards situational judgment rather than perfect optimization.

Civilians & Infection

Civilians behave unpredictably and prioritize survival
Infection spreads gradually through proximity and time
Civilians may be infected before showing symptoms
Military units cannot be infected
Buildings entered by infected are permanently abandoned
Saving civilians generates income
Killing civilians causes heavy penalties

Threats

Infected: Can overrun areas, block evacuation routes, and cause infrastructure to be abandoned, but cannot fully destroy buildings.
Hostile Human Factions: Opportunistic and destructive groups that can destroy buildings and key infrastructure, often becoming more dangerous than the infection itself.

Information & Fog of War

The map is always under fog of war
Vision is affected by day/night cycle and weather
News and radio provide indirect information
Radio stations increase clarity
Radio towers increase precision
Poor placement can reduce information quality

The player is never fully informed — uncertainty is a core mechanic.
